Brussels, Bruges, Ghent - WEEKEND TRIP

ITS THE WEEKEND!

last weekend, i went to belgium. specifically to brussels, bruges, and ghent with my roommate Krystal. we wanted to go somewhere that wasn't Amsterdam (like everyone else wanted to...for obvious reasons) or London, or Spain so we settled in Belgium. My parents had recently gone so I had a lot of tips on what to see and where to go.

The first night we got there was kind of creepy. First of all, Brussels is NOT pretty in comparison to paris. paris stands alone. and so coming from this city, brussels looked very run down and we were not impressed. We got to our hostel and looked around and were kind of uncertain as to its locale. BUT the people in the hostel were nice, it was clean, and we left to go explore. We walked to the city center, but down a really shady street with strip clubs and sex shops and it was around 830 PM. At that point, there were NO women, NO families, just CREEPY 20-40 year old men. We hurried down, and found a street with 10 thai restaurants so we sat down for dinner, and watched the soccer game that was going on that day. We then went to Grand Place and then got followed by a creepy man, who we slipped away from very quickly and returned to the hostel.

The next day, we went to Bruges and Ghent which are both quaint little towns which are super cute. They are very touristy and look like they are stopped in time so I am not sure if they are even real haha. Bruges is apparently the Venice of the north because they have canals so we took a canal ride. And of course we came back and made sure to have fresh street waffles! I was in Belgium after all! This day was much better than our first creepy, tired, day of a delusional traveler. BECAUSE we found a spanish bar which was showing the spain france game. I am a big spain supporter and my man, xabi alonso came through with two goals to make it to the semi finals. It was a great atmosphere being around people who spoke rapid spanish, no english, and all supported their country. simply awesome.

And Sunday, it poured. We were not dressed appropriately. So we went to the belgian museum of fine arts and saw a very famous painting by the french artist Jacques Louis David titled the Death of Marat, depicting the demise of a french revolutionary propagandist, Marat. The story goes that Marat was bathing one day and a woman crept into his window and stabbed him when he was in the bath. And David, a good friend of his, agreed to paint this painful moment. The museums was really nice to keep dry and warm in. We then went home! Because thats what Paris has become, my home. I love it here. absolutely love it. love taking the metro everywhere, walking everywhere, and seeing so much history all around me all the time. and i love walking down a street, looking to the side and seeing unexpected beautiful views of the city. this place is perfect. i just wish all my friends and family and everyone could see everything to understand.
